5 of the Best Sandy Beaches in Malta

Sandy beaches in Malta can definitely be found, if you know where to look.

It seems that a lot of holiday makers take a pass on Malta because they think there are no sandy beaches. However, there are some lovely sandy beaches in Malta that will give you loads to explore as part of a great family holiday.

Before you write-off a trip to the stunning island of Malta, take a look at this list of the best sandy beaches in Malta.

1. Golden Bay – sandy beaches in Malta

The family friendly Golden Bay can be found in the north-west of the island underneath the gaze of the Raddison Blue Hotel. It is most certainly one of Malta’s best sandy beaches.

At Golden Bay beach you have easy access to toilets, kiosks, shops and restaurants. There is a car park with a limited amount of parking spaces so the earlier you arrive the more likely you are to snag a space!

Access to the beach is extremely easy and the beach is very close to the main bus stop.

2. Riviera Beach – sandy beaches in Malta

One of Malta’s best sandy beaches is Riviera Beach. It is about 300 meters south of Golden Bay and by far our favourite!

Għajn Tuffieħa Bay

This sandy beach is also known as Għajn Tuffieħa, which translates to Apple’s Eye. Once you have visited this beach you come to realise that this description is pretty apt. Għajn Tuffieħa really could be regarded as the apple of Malta’s sandy beach eye!

The beach curves around the entirety of Għajn Tuffieħa Bay and there are ample opportunities for walks around the beach, up on top of the bay and over to the next bay for those who don’t like to sit and soak up the sun for too long.

You can also walk from Golden Bay Beach to Riviera Beach along a coastal path that passes Għajn Tuffieħa Tower. This walk offers some great views out over the water and some fantastic photo opportunities.

Once you are on the beach there is a restaurant called Singita. Here you can buy food, hire sun-loungers and even splash out on some paddle boarding lessons!

Access to Riviera Beach is not as easy as Golden Beach. However, the extra effort is well rewarded. If you have a buggy there is a very rugged dirt path that will take you down to the beach. However, on the way back up it is much easier to use the stairs.

There is a small car park at the top of the bay, but it gets busy quickly. There is a bus stop just along the road from the carpark, so getting the bus might be a far easier option, especially on a busy day.

3. Mellieha Bay – sandy beaches in Malta

This is the largest of Malta’s sandy beaches and another strong contender as one of Malta’s best sandy beaches.

The water remains shallow for quite a long way out making this a popular choice for families with young children.

There are cafes, restaurants and toilet facilities available and you can hire sun loungers and umbrellas.

It also has great transport links meaning getting the bus here is not a problem.

4. Ä nejna Bay

Another of Malta’s sandy beaches is Ä nejna Bay. A lovely sandy and secluded beach a little further down from Għajn Tuffieħa Bay.

The shoreline is shallow so great for kids, there is a good car park and also a little kiosk.

However, public transport links to this beach are poor and this is one of the main reasons it is not as popular as the other beaches mentioned. If you have your own car this would make a great option for a day at the beach.

If you don’t have a car you are really going to have to commit by getting a connecting bus from other nearby resorts, which only picks up once every hour.

5. Paradise Bay

Paradise Bay looks over to neighbouring Island Gozo and is on the northernmost tip of Malta.

It is considered a good beach for families and children. The shoreline is shallow and the waters are crystal clear with lots of wildlife meaning Paradise Bay is a great pick for snorkelling!

It’s a beautiful location and you will find access to food, facilities and sunbed and umbrella rentals. The only con is that Paradise Bay is one of Malta’s smaller sandy beaches, so gets busy pretty quickly!
